LOS ANGELES − As flames threatened more Southern California towns on Sunday, firefighters were battling to contain the fires that had spread around the Los Angeles area despite the danger of new wind warnings.

On slopes where the Palisades Fire—the most damaging in Los Angeles history—burgeoned by another 1,000 acres to a total of 23,707, more homes were destroyed as aircraft unloaded water and fire retardant.
