LOS ANGELES As 30,000 people evacuated Tuesday under massive smoke plumes that shrouded most of Los Angeles, a fast-moving wildfire driven by dangerously high-speed Santa Ana winds threatened homes in some of California's most upscale communities, causing traffic bottlenecks and home destruction.


The Palisades Fire burned 2,921 acres in the Pacific Palisades region between the coastal California communities of Santa Monica and Malibu. Officials had previously issued a warning of exceptional fire danger due to strong winds that arrived after the region had prolonged dry weather.
