Early on Wednesday, a car crashed into a crowded area on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, killing at least ten people and injuring up to thirty more.

According to witnesses cited by CBS News, a truck collided with the crowd at great speed, and the driver then exited the vehicle and began shooting, prompting police to retaliate.

The city's official disaster preparedness organization, NOLA Ready, acknowledged that there had been a "mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street."

It stated that New Orleans Emergency Medical Services had transferred 30 injured individuals, 10 of whom had died, and that "public safety partners are responding on scene."
