House Speaker Mike Johnson is extending the 30-day period of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter at the request of President-elect Donald Trump. This will allow flags at the U.S. Capitol to fly at full staff during Trump's inauguration next week.

Less than a week before Trump takes the oath of office as the 47th president on Monday outside the Capitol, Johnson made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday.

"On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump," Johnson said in a press release. "To further honor President Jimmy Carter, the flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day."

President Joe Biden ordered the show of respect following Carter's death to be in effect for 30 days on December 29, which is the standard government time frame for lowering flags following a president's death since 1954.
